Mile 1045
The St. Elias Mountains. This range of
mountains is largely responsible for Yukon's weather. They block the
warm moisture-laden air from the Pacific Ocean from reaching the
Yukon. This creates a very dry climate in the Yukon, as well as
incredibly cold winters. The North American record low temperature
was recorded in Snag, Yukon: -84 degrees F.!! |

Mile 1052

between mountain ranges, right up against the St. Elias mountains. |

Slims River, south end of Kluane Lake.
The white soil is volcanic ash washed down by the
river. When it dries out it blows up in dust clouds. These can be
seen in the above picture. |
