The Bear Glacier |
|
|
This glacier comes down almost to the Stewart
Road. This picture and the next were taken while standing on the
road! The glacier comes down pretty close to the road.
At least,
it used to -- see the next section (below)!

Note the blue colour of the ice. |

The retreat of the Bear Glacier -
Climate Change in action!
In common with most glaciers in the world, the Bear Glacier has
retreated quite a bit since 1978. Here are 3 more photos of the Bear
Glacier as it was in 1978, followed by three taken in 2003 (25 years
later), plus one taken in 2004.
Thanks to Ian Spooner & Rebecca Haspel for making the 2003
& 2004 photos available! |

The Bear Glacier in
1978... |
|
Note how this photo shows the glacier coming almost to
the road |
|
|
|
|
Again, you can see that the end of the glacier is
literally almost a stone's throw from the road |
|
|
25 years later, in
2003... |
|
Definitely not a "stone's throw" from
the road any more!! |

A view from the slopes above the road,
looking down on the glacier.
The level where the glacier used to reach is plainly visible along the
lower part of the mountain face. |

This photo shows how far from the road the end of the
glacier was in 2003!!
Note again the line along the far mountainside that indicates the former
thickness of the glacier.
Quite a difference!! |
