Mile 858

Near Jake's Corner (the junction with the Atlin Road).

Mile 860

Also near Jake's Corner (the junction with the Atlin Road).

Mile 890

West of Marsh Lake.

"Say, what's that smooth black stuff that the road is made of??  Oh, it's pavement!"

This is the first pavement in about 800 miles! On a motorbike, you feel as though you are floating after such a long stretch of gravel road.

Mile 900 (approx)

Whitehorse. This is the capital city of the Yukon. It's also the largest city, with a population of 15,000.

It sits right on the Yukon River (visible in the foreground).

Miles Canyon on the Yukon River at Whitehorse. This used to be a spectacular and dangerous rapids prior to the construction of a dam downstream.

These rapids were a major obstacle to the Yukon gold rush in the late 1800s.

An abandoned paddlewheeler up on blocks at "Paddlewheel Village", east of Whitehorse.

I think they are all gone now (2003).
