On my return trip I stopped and
climbed up one of the lesser of the Ogilvie Mountains.
This was harder than it looked, since these mountains are made up
largely of piles of rock debris (scree), which slides out from under your
feet very easily. I found a place where there were trees and
shrubs growing and managed to climb up fairly high there.
This is a view looking north along
the Dempster Hwy as it leaves the Ogilvie Mountains

Here is
another view from the climb, looking south along the Dempster.

And a third view, again looking north. Here we
see the Ogilvie Mountains fading into the distance to the right.
The Dempster Hwy, not visible in this picture, sidles away from
these mountains off to the left.

A lot of the route of the Dempster
Hwy passes through taiga, which consists of endless miles of black
spruce trees and bog. This is
near Mile 143, looking east towards the receding Ogilvie Mtns.
The Highway is gradually leaving them behind as it continues north. |

Here is
another view of the Ogilvie Mtns as they fade toward the distant
east.
This is near the beginning of the long
ascent up to the Eagle Plain.
This is near Mile 152.
